Lupin is an excellent supplement for “focus feeding” sheep at mating. When heats are synchronized feeding 400-500 g/d of lupin seed from day 9-11 to day 14 of the ovarian cycle can be beneficial to enhance prolificacy of Sarda ewes even with BCS ranging between 2.5 and 3.0. Unfortunately lupin, in particular white lupin (Lupinus albus), can be unpalatable to sheep due to high content of alkaloids which give a bitter taste to the seed. Maria depicts a practical and easy way of estilmating lupin seed palatability to sheep, i.e. tasting it.
