• The optimum birth weight for singles, twins and triplets is 6, 5.6 and 4.7 kg, respectively
• Each 0.5 kg increase in birth weight increases weaning weight (at 14 weeks) by 1.7 kg
• Lambs less than 3 kg and greater than 7 kg have the highest mortality
• Feeding ewes adequately in late pregnancy will increase lamb birth weight, colostrum quality and quality and will in turn reduce lamb mortality
• Pregnancy scan ewes at approximately 80 days post ram introduction
• Group ewes according to litter size (based on scanning) and expected date of lambing (raddle colour)
• Change raddle colour frequently (e.g. weekly) during the breeding season thus enabling grouping in late gestation by expected lambing date
• Analyse forage to develop a nutrition programme to meet the ewes energy and protein requirements
