A poor udder conformation (falling udder, udder asymmetry, bad location of the teats, …) often makes the first suckling of the lambs difficult. Indeed, lambs often look for the teats at the height of the groin. In addition, with twins, a strong udder asymmetry can cause problems. The selection of the udder morphology fullfils two purposes: to facilitate milking (for milk production) and to allow the lamb to suckle in the best possible conditions. A scoring grid is used to evaluate the conformation of the udder. It is used to integrate this trait into the selection. It can also be used by breeders to choose which ewe to cull/cast.
