Dr. Negrut is using an adult ewe in the orphan lambs pen to increase survival rates of lambs. He selects an experienced adult ewe, with calm temperament and good maternal instincts, which has weaned several times her own lambs. He noticed that orphan lambs who are in the presence of an adult ewe are less stressed, vocalize less, start consuming lamb starter at an earlier age and have higher survival and growth rates up to the age of weaning. Furthermore, after weaning when they are joined to the other lambs, have less problems in adapting to the new rearing environment.
