After birth, the lambs must suck quickly the colostrum to expel the meconium, and to gain a supply of energy and immunity. To avoid the risk of insufficient amount of colostrum, the farmer always has a stock of cow colostrum in the freezer. Colostrum is packaged in 1-litre bottles (freezer packaging can also be done with ice-cube bags) that are thawed, if necessary, in a water-bath. It is then given at will in a bottle to lambs that require it.
