In big sheep flocks which do not practice performance recordings, ewes could be selected for prolificacy and longevity based on ear notches. Those ewes who lamb and wean twins or triplets should at the time of weaning be marked with an ear notch. Replacement ram lambs should be kept from old ewes which have at least 5 notches, meaning that they were weaning multiple lambs for 5 years and they are hardy animals. In this way, farmers will select for high fertility, increased prolificacy, high lamb weaning rates and longevity in their flocks.
